Religious Organizations chaired by Rabbi
Solomon Schiff, Greater Miami Jewish Federation.
- The only other chair has been Sister Jeanne OLaughlin.
- On October 29, 1989, over 6500 people attended the "Interfaith Family Event
Against Drugs" at the Miami Arena.
- Attendees pledged themselves, their programs, their creativity and ideas to reduce the
drug problem.
- Messages were received from the President Bush and Governor Martinez
recognizing this first ever gathering.
- Each year, at least one large event is held during Red
Ribbon Week. Some of the past locations were Little Haiti, Sweet Home Missionary,
Baptist Church, St. Marys, Glendale Baptist Church and Temple Beth Shalom.
- Over 60% of Miami Dade Countys, religious organizations have received
trainings on substance abuse ministry. (That is what the faith community can do to help
reduce drug use). As a result, the faith community has increased the number of ways to
reach their congregations such as...
- Putting anti-drug and resource information in the
pamphlet racks outside the church.
- Allowing AA, NA, Ala-teen, etc., to use their rooms for meetings.
- Bonding with another church in another part of town.
- Presenting four anti-drug, anti-violence sermons a year.
- As Sister Jeanne OLaughlin has stated, "until
we put ourselves in the presence of God, we can not solve the problem".
